Book Review: Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui by Karen Kingston
I remember reading the original version of Karen Kingston’s book, Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui, back in the late 1990s, when I first heard about simple living. The idea of clearing clutter and arranging my home in the most pleasing and fortuitous way appealed to me. The newly updated version of Kingston’s book is packed with the same great information I remember — her sections on identifying clutter and how clutter affects you are fantastic and incredibly detailed. I also enjoyed her detailed sorting your possessions and how to actually clear your clutter.
I was fascinated by Kingston’s description of how clutter and feng shui symbology meet. That said, I found the whole book to be a little light on the feng shui. Short of a introductory glance over the bagua map and how to place it over your house’s layout, there really wasn’t a whole lot of discussion about feng shui. I would have liked a little more detail on the feng shui side of things. Most of the section dealt with how clutter in any bagua can bring disharmony and disaster to the area of your life the bagua represents. I thought that was pretty self-explanatory and was hoping for more juicy details about furniture arrangement or colors.
I had a hard time with her section on clutter clearing your body, in which she discussed in great detail why you should have a colon cleansing. It felt a little much for me in a book that was primarily about cleaning out your house. There are diagrams and everything…
Overall, this is a fun book if you need some clutter-clearing 101 or are looking for a detailed resource on how clutter affects your life!
